“Storm in Miniature”

An exhibition of dioramas, vignettes and models inspired by the Croatian War of Independence

With this exhibition titled STORM IN MINIATURE, we as hobbyists and amateur fine scale modelmakers, wish to make a modest and dignified contribution to the marking of the fifteenth anniversary of the Operation Storm, the magnificent and victorious military and police operation to liberate our homeland. It is dedicated to the veterans and victims of the Croatian War of Independence. The first setting of the exhibition will be promoted in the town of Knin on 5 August 2010. The setting consists of 25 dioramas, vignettes and models in various standard modelling scales. By its conceptual and artistic format and number of exhibits, it is evocative of the 25 fields in the Croatian coat of arms. The authors of the exhibits include fifteen amateur scale modelmakers from several Croatian cities. After Knin, the exhibition will be hosted by other Croatian cities, either with the identical setting or with addition of new exhibits and other content like lectures, promotions, projections and workshops. In October and November 2012, exhibition will be hosted in Zagreb Technical Museum. The authors of the 35 models of exhibition’s new setting are scale modelmakers from several Croatian cities. Each model and exhibit has been made according to the original photos and other available archival sources, which are partly presented in catalogue together with the models and on the accompanying panels. Rather than using the competitive scale modelling criteria, in our selection of the models we were primarily governed by thematic representation, historical authenticity and the authors’ response. Some authors are therefore represented by several exhibits, whereas others have displayed their old work, as well as the new models inspired by this exhibition.

With this exhibition, the accompanying catalogue, the projects developed by the Signum Laudis Association, as well as the projects that will be promoted or inspired by it, we would like to support the positive evaluation of the Croatian War of Independence in Croatia and abroad, promote Croatian history, and reclaim certain historical facts from oblivion or distortion. We also wish to bring closer to the international scale modelling community the Croatian War of Independence and the Croatian history. In Croatia, we wish to raise the popularity of the scale modelling hobby, particularly among teenagers and kids. That is why the exhibition has an educational nature, too. Apart from stimulating interest in history, developing technological culture and artistic creativity, and popularizing scale modelling as a hobby, we are convinced it has an important place in prevention of youth addiction.
